Website Types

Website builders are the easiest tools to use to create a simple website for those with little to no website experience. They include hosting - so you don't have to have a separate hosting plan - but you also can't move your website. While they are easy to use and set up, you don't own your website and they are less customizable. Examples include: wix, shopify, squarespace, weebly, faithconnector, etc.

A Content Management System (CMS) is a software application that helps you create, manage, and deliver content on your website more efficiently. They have a steeper learning curve than a website builder, they do not have drag and drop functionality, you will need a hosting plan, and if you aren't tech savy you will need someone to install it for you. They are not 100% customizable since you are limited by the plug-ins available on the market. However, you do own the website and can port it from host to host if you need to and technically you wouldn't need a developer to manage it. Examples include: Wordpress, Joomla, Drupal, etc.

Custom websites or applications are custom-programmed html sites that may be static or dynamic in nature. They require hosting and knowledge of html, css, and most likely javascript at the very least. The best part is they are the most customizable as you have full control of every aspect of the website. If you need a special tool for your business you can create it! You can also still integrate with other tools on the market and there are thousands of prebuilt templates for you to choose from.
